Who Needs a Massage?

It's nearing the end of August, which means back to school and for many, back to a familiar routine. Summer is a great time to relax, take trips and spend time with family but often we let our personal care routine slide. As we navigate into autumn I'd like to encourage you to consider making massage part of your wellness routine.

So who needs a massage? The answer to that is easy...EVERYONE! Massage is a wonderful therapy that can benefit anyone no matter what age, size, or health status. Massage doesn't discriminate, it meets you where you are at this point in your life and can add tremendous benefits to your overall health and well being.

Clinically, massage has been proven to improve symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression, headaches, digestive dysfunction, insomnia, reduce pain, lower blood pressure, ease symptoms of Fibromyalgia, soft tissue strains, TMJ and other sports injuries. What other therapy do you know of that can help with such a wide variety of symptoms, and have no bad side effects?

It's never too early, or too late to get a massage. Massage therapy can provide benefits from cradle to grave. As an infant, massage can calm, soothe and bring awareness to a baby, and in the later stages of life, massage can help the elderly reconnect with their bodies, calm agitation, and relieve symptoms of pain and anxiety.

So how often should we be getting a massage? That depends on what is going on with you physically. If you are feeling good- a monthly massage is a wonderful way to maintain that sense of well being. This is a good schedule to help release tension and work out the knots from day to day living.

If you are dealing with a particular issue, say lower back pain, it may be better to see your massage therapist on a more frequent basis. Each therapist has their own philosophy about timing, but they should be willing to talk to you and help you develop a plan that will maximize your time and allow you to get the most of your massage. In my own practice, I like to see clients who are dealing with a chronic issue a little more frequently. We will work on their health challenges, (possibly for a shorter session) but I also encourage them to come in for a full body massage during that time. Above all, talk to you massage therapist! We are here to help you achieve your wellness goals!
